Yesterday, I felt like painting with my amateur skills about a situation in our life which scares and drives me.
There are so many people in today’s world that are working in their job or studying something they don’t love. The quickest way for you to identify if I’m talking about you is the question whether you’re looking forward to Monday or not? If not, this post is for you…
Each of us determines whether they are being a robot and clown, working for other people’s dream or if you’re the happy creator of your life, working for your dreams. Let me go further into this topic while making some simple mathematics that will illustrate the importance of this punch line I’m making.
I don’t judge people working in a job if they’re fulfilled and get to achieve their own dreams outside of work by doing so. Don’t get me wrong. I’m also fine with the fact that you may not be clear about what your dreams are as of now, we can work on that together and unleash your inner potential and passion for life.
However, I’m scared that people don’t realise how much precious life time they are waisting in a job they don’t like while spending time with their colleagues at work which don’t inspire them. There are also crucial psychological implications which will have an affect on your health in the long-run, but that’s a topic for a different post.
I just want to talk about time. Nowadays, an average citizen works from when they’re 25 years old until they’re 65 (even 70 if we take current developments of ageing populations into account), meaning that they’ll work 40 years. Simple mathematics is that we spend roughly 10 hours a day for a job with commuting, getting ready, lunch break, etc…
…resulting in 10 hours a day, 50 hours a week, 200 hours a month, 2200 hours a year (taking a month of vacation), leading to 88.000 hours in their careers. The free time during the week is much lower – 52.800 as most people sleep 8 hours. In this free time you still have to cook, go grocery shopping, clean and maybe work more. Hence, we have little time to actually do what we really enjoy and brings us fulfilment into our lives.
If you’d put 88.000 hours into ONE topic which you’re really interested in, would you become a master in this topic? We all can agree that the answer is a clear YES! Could you make a living and feed your family by being a master of a topic that you’re passionate about? YES! There is enough evidence in today’s internet world.
That’s the reason why pursuing our dream lives is so practical and not some crazy fantasy. The internet has opened up so many possibilities but most of us think that it’s still crazy to do it. Why? Because we grew up in an environment where it’s normal to only get a job & be frustrated and without passion for 40 years of our lives!
We grew up in a system, which includes education like schools and universities, that doesn’t want you to pursue your dreams. That’s why we got “programmed” into not even taking this possibility into account as our system only works in showing us our weaknesses so that we get another degree to be “skilled enough”, buy something else to look prettier etc…
And then it’s even funnier (& scary) in my opinion that we’re building technologies such as AI that will be able to eradicate parts of the workforce that was indulged into taking a certain degree, because “that’s what you should do”.
Life is long, yet short. Don’t be a robot or clown which is living a life like in a prison. The prison is your job, hence, working for other people’s dream. You have the choice although it may be scary to actually become the creator of your life and not be in prison for 40 years of your life!
With 65 you won’t have the time to get back your youth where you’re able to make amazing experiences while pursuing your dream life. You have to ask yourself NOW: DO I WANT TO GO INTO PRISON and only value the money and status you receive from your job OR do I want to be the creator of my life and live in happiness and joy every day?
My recommendation is to go talk to people in their 70, 80s. Look them straight into their eyes and feel what they’re saying. If you do this correctly with some people, I can most certainly predict that you’ll be scared by seeing the regret in these persons’ eyes and it’ll make you rethink your choice of what you’ll want to do for the next years of your life.
